The MSR is one of the standard competition formats for both bagpipe bands as well as the different instrumental soloists. The traditional grouping of tunes displays a band or soloist’s ability to accurately perform these contrasting styles accurately. In the modern bagpipe idiom, a “snare solo” implies a single drummer performing with a single bagpiper, as the drum score is dependent upon and created to accompany the bagpipe tune. The chosen tunes for any MSR are compiled and decided by the bagpiper and drummer.
